Universal Awning adds fixed and retractable covers to pergolas and trellis structures at restaurants, hotels, multifamily properties, commercial patios, and homes. The cover is selected around the frame, desired shade, operation, drainage, appearance, and exposure.

Planning the system
An open pergola may provide partial shade through its overhead members but still leave a patio exposed during the hours it is used most. Adding fabric or rigid panels can increase coverage without changing the entire outdoor structure.
We review the frame material, bay spacing, connections, slope, alignment, desired openness, furniture, heaters, lights, fans, doors, and weather expectations before recommending a fixed or retractable cover.
Available configurations
The right cover depends on how much sky should remain open, whether the system needs to move, and how the existing or planned frame can support it.

Project planning
A pergola that was built as an open structure may not have been designed for a tensioned, retractable, or solid cover. The frame, connections, member spacing, slope, condition, and proposed loads should be reviewed before the new cover is selected.
Common applications
Pergola covers work well where a property already values the open frame but needs more control over sun and overhead coverage.

Project process
The frame, shade target, cover material, operation, drainage, and patio conditions are reviewed before the panels are fabricated.
Measure the bays and document frame material, members, connections, alignment, condition, access, and exposure.
Set fixed or retractable operation, panel direction, fabric or rigid material, attachments, stack, and target coverage.
Coordinate drainage, wind guidance, lights, heaters, fans, doors, furniture, power, approvals, and installation access.
Prepare the approved cover, complete field installation, and test fit, tension, movement, and clearances as applicable.
Pergola Covers questions
Options may include fixed fabric panels, removable shade panels, slide-on-wire canopies, translucent rigid panels, or project-specific metal elements. The frame and intended use determine what fits.
Possibly. The frame dimensions, connections, alignment, cable support, exposure, and available stack area need to be reviewed first.
That depends on the selected system. Shade fabric may not be rain-rated, while rigid or specially detailed covers handle water differently. Material, slope, seams, gaps, and drainage should be confirmed.
Some retractable configurations can be motorized. The frame, bay size, system compatibility, power route, controls, and operating needs must be coordinated.
Yes. Universal Awning can discuss a new trellis or pergola-style frame as well as covers for existing serviceable structures. The 4K Aluminum Trellis and Metal Trellis pages show related frame options.
Send photographs of the full frame and connections, approximate bay dimensions, desired fixed or retractable operation, shade or rain expectations, fabric or panel preferences, and access information.
Share photographs and dimensions of the pergola, the shade area below, and whether the cover should be fixed or retractable. We will review the frame and appropriate panel options.
